Our first guest this year will be Dr. Thilina, a researcher and practitioner of science communication at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Title and abstract: Perspectives and Development in Science Communication This talk will highlight the scope of interdisciplinary science communication and public engagement at the ‘ELSI SciComm Lab.’ The projects ranging from art-science residency, communicating detection of life, evidence-based outreach, and so on will be presented. Furthermore, ELSI-supported ‘Japan SciCom Forum’ organisation activities will be presented. ?? Speaker details: Dr. Thilina Heenatigala, Assistant Professor, Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI), Japan. Thilina Heenatigala (he/him) is the Director of Communications and Assistant Professor at Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) in Tokyo. He leads the outreach team, coordinates science communication projects, and teaches the science communication course in the ELSI graduate programme. His research interests are public engagement evaluation, science & society strategies at research institutions, and decolonising science in academia. He co-coordinates the Japan SciCom Forum (JSF), the only English-language science communication group in Japan to host an annual conference and regular meetups. He’s a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and supports the Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE) and the Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO) to focus on astronomy outreach and education in developing countries. He also supports the IAU Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) as a reviewer for annual projects on astronomy for development. Thilina is also the Manager of the Falling Walls Engage Hub Japan, where he coordinates science engagement workshops and dialogue. He coordinates the Decolonsing Science sessions at the United Nations Science Summit of the United Nations General Assembly. ?? No particular capacity ?? Free ??
